Club History
The Wilderness Center Nature Photo Club was founded in the Fall of 1978 by a group of Wilderness Center members interested in nature photography. The impetus for the formation of this club resulted from interest generated during a nature photography course conducted by Ken Gerber in a series of classes beginning in 1976. His enthusiasm for the project infected all present.
The prime purpose of the club was to foster the interest of beginners and advanced amateurs in the use of the photographic process to depict all aspects of nature. In addition, the club seek to act as the photographic arm of The Wilderness Center supplying such photographic material and displays as were requested by other groups within The Wilderness Center organization.
Russell Lindsay was the first president of the organization in 1978-79 and successfully saw the club through the initial phases of organization. During his term a constitution was drawn up and adopted by the membership.
During the first two years of existence, a darkroom was built and outfitted so it could be used by anyone desiring to do so. Ken Gerber conducted on-going courses in black and white film development and printing using this facility. During this time there was the nucleus of a useful photographic library. Both of these projects were accomplished through club purchases and generous donations by members and other interested parties.
